Estimation of 3D Motion Parameters

A method is proposed for estimating 3D motion parameters from given optical flow. In this method, the observation coordinate system (x-y) is rotated imaginarily around the Z-axis step by step, and, at each rotation angle, an evaluation function is calculated as square error between the true optical flow and the one determined from estimated motion parameters. The motion parameters which give the smallest value of the evaluation function are determined as the solution. Unique motion parameters are obtained by a simple search in 1D space. We have implemented this method on a computer and obtained satisfactory results.
